Biography
I am a Professor of Strategy and International Business at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University. Previously, I have been on the faculties of the School of Business (and the Elliott School of International Affairs) at the George Washington University and at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, in addition to being a Senior Fellow at the Mack Institute for Innovation Management. I earned my B.A. in Political Science from McGill University in Canada, my M.Sc. in International and European Politics from Edinburgh University in Scotland and my Ph.D. with a joint degree in Strategy & Organization and International Business from the Anderson School at UCLA. During the 2010-2011 academic year, I was awarded an ASA/NSF/BEA Fellowship for my research at the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) at the US Department of Commerce. Prior to graduate school, I worked in several government positions on Capitol Hill, and my last position was as a Ways and Means Committee Associate in the U.S. House of Representatives.
My research sits at the intersection of strategic management and international business, exploring the global strategies and organizational structures of multinational corporations (MNCs). Through my research, I seek to understand how the strategic and organizational choices multinational corporations make across product and geographic markets impact their success in these markets. To date, my research has been published in several of the top journals in strategic management and international business, including the Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Management Science, Organization Science, the Journal of International Business Studies and the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization.
My research has been recognized with several awards. My dissertation won the best dissertation award from both the Academy of International Business (in 2001) and the Academy of Management International Management Division (in 2002), in addition to being a finalist for the best dissertation award in the Business Policy and Strategy Division at AOM (in 2001). I was selected to be a finalist for the Haynes Prize for Most Promising Scholar under the age of 40 at the Academy of International Business annual meeting in 2006, and one of my working papers won the Dom Cabral Best Paper in Strategy/IB Theory in the International Management Division at the 2013 Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management. I was awarded an ASA/NSF/BEA funded fellowship for my research on knowledge creation and transfer within multinational corporations using the BEA data and I spent the 2010-2011 academic year in Washington DC merging the US Patent and Trade Office (USPTO) data on the worldwide patents of all US MNCs. As a continuation of this research project, I was awarded funding from the Mack Institute at the Wharton School to merge in the Thomson Innovation Derwent Patent data to explore the global innovation and patenting strategies of MNCs.
I am a Senior Editor at Organization Science and I served two terms as Associate Editor at the Strategic Management Journal (2017-2022) and Consulting Editor at the Journal of International Business Studies (2017-2022). In 2016 and 2011, I was awarded a best reviewer award from the Journal of International Business Studies, in addition to receiving a best reviewer award from Organization Science in 2011 and the International Management Division at the Academy of Management in 2011 and 2018. I have also been an active participant in the organizing committees of several conferences. In May, 2018, I was elected to serve as an Officer of the Strategic Management (STR, formerly BPS) Division from 2018-2023. I was the Division Chair for the 2021-2022 academic year and the Program Chair for the crazy year that AOM first offered a virtual annual conference (2019-2020). Previously, I was elected to serve on the BPS Executive Committee (EC) in the Academy of Management (and served from 2008-2010) in addition to being elected to serve on the the INFORMS College on Organization Science Executive Committee (serving from 2007-2010). As part of the INFORMS EC, I ran the Best Dissertation Proposal Competition in 2007. I am an elected Fellow of the Academy of International Business and I was honored to be selected (by students and faculty) to receive the George Washington University Trachtenberg Prize for Teaching Excellence in 2019.
